Treat location, accreditation and funding as separate checks
A property can be close to campus without being approved for your funding arrangement. A property’s accreditation also does not establish your own funding eligibility or guarantee an available bed. Confirm all three before accepting an offer.
Begin with your exact teaching campus and the official accommodation instructions from NSFAS and your institution. Follow links from the official NSFAS website for the current process rather than using a portal address sent by an unknown advertiser.
Use listings to build a shortlist
Search for your institution, campus or nearby area on ResMate. Where a listing states NSFAS accreditation, treat that as information to verify for the exact property and relevant academic period. Record the address, provider, room type and dates.
Ask the responsible official office how that property is checked, which application or placement steps you must complete and whether the offered room is covered. A provider’s brand name or another student’s prior approval is not enough to establish your placement.
- Exact property and provider identity.
- Your confirmed teaching campus.
- Your current funding status and required placement steps.
- The offered room, dates and written agreement.
Resolve charges before accepting accommodation
Ask which rent and services are included in the official arrangement and whether any proposed payment is permitted and covered. If the provider requests a deposit, top-up, booking fee or other charge you do not understand, confirm it with NSFAS or your institution before paying.
Keep the written quote, official response, application reference and lease together. Do not assume a general accommodation allowance or an amount from a previous year applies to your situation.
If you cannot find a suitable placement
Contact your institution’s accommodation or financial-aid office with your campus, funding status and the properties you have checked. Ask about the current approved process and the route for unresolved placement questions.
Consider nearby areas only where the total cost, transport and official requirements work. Do not sign an unaffordable private agreement on the assumption that funding will later reimburse it.
Official information and further help
